Really disappointed with these. Yes you can have noise cancelling without music – but you can’t have music without noise cancelling – i.e. – when the battery dies. Oh, and it will die often, as there is no auto-off – and you’re not used to having to turn headphones off – so easy to miss.
Also – I’m not impressed with the sound. The noise cancelling produces an audible high frequency hiss – like tinnitus – w/o music, and with music – it seems dulled – like over Dolby’ed – compared side-by-side with my Seinnheiser’s. Pass. Honestly.
Sound is different for each person.
I like the Beats by Dre. I think a lot of people are put of by those because they have dre’s name on them. That’s silly. 
haha I”m 53, white and they sound great. I’m sure that these things matter to some buyers. Sad but true. Otherwise I wouldn’t mention it.
I think these sound great and mine don’t have hiss.
I warned ya about the battery thing.
I returned my beats studio for these! Noise canceling, construction, comfort, and all around sound is better!
